An “Over-the-hill” Birthday: I {Finally} Turned 30!

Turning 30

Well, it finally happened.  I’m officially 30 and I don’t feel any different except for the fact that I’m happy to finally be 30!  LOL.  I never felt my age as I even now enjoy escape rooms just as I did in my teens. Now I can sit comfortably at 30 and know that my age is more a match with who I am as a person.

I’m not the type to go out to parties, unless you count the occasional quinceañera, wedding or new year’s toast…so I guess 30 has always felt within reach.  ;)  Another great thing is the fact that I’m finally catching up with my hubby, who’s 34.  It’s nice to be in the same decade…lol.

Ok, so some might think that the cupcakes above are a little dramatic.  I mean, it’s only 30, right?  But see, you don’t know the joke between hubby and I about him being old as dirt (34) and me still in my twenties…lol.  My mom used to tease him a lot about “robbing the cradle”…ewww.  Nicely put mom… *rolling eyes*.  But the joke kind of stuck and I’ve been waiting for almost five years to finally turn 30 and catch up with him.  The over-the-hill cupcakes above symbolize my finally crossing that threshold.

So now I’m 30, and yes, hubby did give me a small “over-the-hill” party and cupcakes similar to the ones above…no R.I.P. signs, thankfully!  ;)  And despite being sick with a cold all week, I mostly had fun and definitely thought a lot about what it means to be 30.

I had a lot of milestones in my life before I turned 30 and there are still many more that I would love to have under my belt before I really sink over the hill!  Here are a few of the more influential ones that I’d like to mention…

  • At age 19 – Moved out of my parents house and bought my first car…yes, it was a clunker.  ;)
  • At age 21 – Met and started dating my wonderful hubby and started college with his support.
  • At age 23 – Accepted hubby’s proposal and celebrated Easter as a newly inducted Catholic.
  • At age 25 – Got married, traveled and moved around a lot.  Tons and tons of college papers due!
  • At age 26 – Had a beautiful baby girl!!  I also got Bell’s Palsy and learned to embrace that difference with hubby’s help and my family’s support.
  • At age 27 – Moved back home and started my first at-home business (photography).
  • At age 28 – Moved away from home again and let hubby take a turn as the breadwinner…definitely a different experience for someone like me who has to “control” every event in my life…lol.
  • At age 29 – Started blogging and met some amazing people online!  I mean it, you guys are the greatest!
  • In the near future – In 2012, I’m planning to celebrate my five year wedding anniversary with my hubby!  Here’s hoping the world doesn’t end…lol.  ;)

So, what’s different about being 30?  Well, nothing really…but now, I feel like I’m a woman that others can take seriously after hearing my age.  I think that stereotypes about a lack of maturity in your 20’s can often be misleading and definitely do have an impact on the way others view you.  I bet there are some people reading this right now who are even thinking that 30 is far too young to be considered ‘experienced’ or ‘knowledgeable’…and in some ways, they would definitely be right, but I think that each of us should be judged on our own merits and not for the successes or shortcomings of others.  So, for you “over-the-hill” folks, don’t worry…you’re only as young as you feel.  :)

P.S. I’m glad to {finally} be 30!  ;)

What factors brought you to your current age?  If you’ve already passed 30, did you feel that it was a big milestone for you?  What stereotypes about age drive you crazy?

Happy Birthday wishes to you!!  I hope you are having a wonderful time, making new memories with your loved ones.

Reminds me of the expression: Age is only a number.  You are as old or young as you feel.

I have days when I feel young, immature and wished I knew more while on others I’m aware of how experience has enriched my life with valuable lessons.  I never liked telling my age because I felt I would be judged negatively in one way or another especially as a woman.  I’d rather be known for my actions and words.

Exactly!  We women have such a hard time revealing age because we are judged on it CONSTANTLY!  Such an important point.  :)

Thanks for the birthday wishes!  I'm enjoying being 30 with a 3 year old daughter and a 34 year old hubby…lol.  They are what makes my world go 'round.

I definitely have an immature day here or there too and I like to celebrate them with an old, cheesy movie and by getting some cracks in on my old-fogie husband.  ;)  Playing super silly games with Lily also keeps me young, and you know I can never get enough of My Little Ponies…LOL!  If I wasn't embarrassed about it, I would post a video of me doing a MLPony impression..haha…Lily loves it!  ;)

How did I miss your birthday????? Probably because I have a sick kid and have not really been lurking on Facebook much. Happy birthday to you mama! 30 is awesome! I agree that I felt much more grown up and respected when I hit that milestone. This next birthday will put me closer to 40 than 30 and now I am REALLY feeling over the hill. I think stopping time right about 30/32 would have worked for me. :) Enjoy your 30's!

Thanks Jennifer!  Yeah, I know what you mean…those viruses are making the rounds!  I was sick through most of my birthday, but we still managed to have some fun.  ;)

Hey, if society had it's way women would be over the hill at 20!  LOL.  40's good…definitely brings you wisdom!

Definitely working on enjoying my 30's and I think I want to do something fearless this coming year…hmmm…I'll have to think on that.  ;)

Happy Belated Birthday, Chantilly!!!  You'll love being 30!  I would say that the 30's are the new 20's, but since I'm a lot closer to turning 40 (in just 3 more years), I'll say that being 30 is like being a teenager!  It really is a fun age.  At least for me it was.  Turning 30 is like finally becoming a real grown-up.  :)

Thanks Leslie!!  I'm actually excited and feeling the same…"Yay!  I'm a real grown up!"  LOL!  I'm planning to go out on a limb and have lots of fun this year.  Since I had my daughter it's been more about the business of living, but this year, I'm going to get in some me time and I finally feel like it's ok to focus on me sometimes.  ;)

So glad you had fun in your 30's!  I'm definitely going to enjoy mine too!  :)
